Glossary of GDC Terms
Affected: there is evidence of disease in the sample registered with GDC.
Carrier: a dog can transmit the disease gene to its offspring, without
showing symptoms itself.
Certification: no evidence of the disease at the time of evaluation.
DNA: a method of identification for an affected, a carrier or a normal
animal in some diseases.
Evaluation: examination for disease by an expert.
Genetic: inherited from genes transmitted from the mother and father.
Genotype: ability to reproduce a particular phenotype whether the
individual shows it or not.
Histopathology: study of body tissue to diagnose disease.
Normal: GDC prefers to use the word
"unaffected", except in the case of a DNA identified disease
where the
carriers are also identified.
Phenotype: actual traits of a particular dog.
Registered: every evaluation (affected or unaffected) is registered with GDC
and is included in the KinReportŪ.
Unaffected: no evidence of the disease (may be a carrier).
